Head-coverings were a critical component of dress in the Middle Ages. Hats were common with men and women of all classes, and came in a wide variety of forms, and made of a wide variety of materials. Men wore their hats alone or over a hood or coif. Our men’s hats are based on a pattern that dates from circa 1315 to 1440 and is such a universal style that it is appropriate from the Late 13th century into the early Renaissance.

A man peruse’s a merchant’s wares. He wears a gold linen tunic and a pair of sage green linen chauses, which would be tied to his braies underneath. He adds yet another splash of color with his bright blue wool garters and slate blue short tailed hood. The look is completed with a black belt, pair of black ankle boots, and of course, a wool brimmed hat.
A man ready for winter in a full wool wardrobe. he wears a simple hunter green wool tunic, slightly rolled at the cuff to reveal his undershirt, and a bright orange wool dagged hood. Not shown are his camel wool chauses, tied to his braise, and the garters that hold them in place. To finish the look he of course has the brimmed hat, as well as a decorated belt and a pair of brown ankle boots.
